WI wednesday: a northwoods escape

this stunning eagle river wedding encompasses just what a northwoods wedding should feel like. from start to finish, monica + josh used fun woodsy details to tell a beautiful love story that we can’t help but love. the wild eagle lodge provided a stunning backdrop for their fairy tale wedding with fun details like a pirate ship to celebrate!

we love the decor, the thought, and all of the work that went in to making their day stunning. we love the DIY inspiration, the fabulous use of natural materials, and the great color scheme. check out these brilliant photos from amber engfer photography and enjoy!

A northwoods wedding was my picture perfect wedding since I was very young. Little did I know that rustic weddings would be in style when it was my turn to tie the knot! As a Graphic Designer by trade it was very exciting to plan the details of the entire event, from invitations to center pieces. Creating the decor for a tent reception was especially enjoyable since I was literally starting with a blank canvas. I was beyond thrilled to see it all come together and couldn’t have been happier with the end result. It truly was a magical day in so many ways!

The northwoods of Wisconsin was our destination. After making a trip to Eagle River to see a few resorts first hand it was a no brainer — Wild Eagle Lodge was the perfect place!! It had the northwoods feel we were hoping for and the accommodations are first class. Now that we had our location locked and loaded we were ready to dive into all of the details!

I wanted my bridesmaids to wear black because we weren’t sure what color the leaves would be in September and I didn’t want them to clash. Now that I see the pictures I’m so happy I went with black — they look fabulous! And, I knew I wanted them to have the option to wear different styles. Not only would it make them more comfortable and show off their individual styles, it would also break up the symmetry in the photographs. They were the best bridesmaids a bride could ask for!!!

My Dad thought I was crazy when I told him that I wanted my cake stand to be made out of tree stumps but like always, he said “whatever you want”. He went to his cousin’s farm to find the perfect stump to cut the pieces from in his brush pile. He made one in the summer but then it became dry and cracked so he made another one just days before the wedding! My Dad’s garage turned into “The Wedding Workshop” for months leading up to my wedding. I had him busy doing all kinds of projects — good thing he retired in March! He hand cut all of the name card holders and stands for the table numbers. We were able to find all of the wood used for those in brush piles. There had been a big windstorm so everyone had branches on their curbs! Of course I was looking for branches with moss and other elements which gave them more character.

Josh found that is was much easier to let me just run with my ideas but he did say “the only thing I want is the pirate ship” and he got his pirate ship and it was an absolute blast!! A great way for the wedding party to have some time together and it wonderful to see the lake (saw a bald eagle) and take a little boat cruise as husband and wife before the reception began!

The tent is so big and so white that I knew we had to do something dramatic to make it not feel like a tent. I bought the paper lanterns from another gal who had used them for her wedding so that was a great deal and now I’m going to sell them to another bride-to-be! I am a big fan of reduce, reuse, recycling! I wanted to utilize candlelight to give the room a more romantic feel and the black table cloths help show off and soften the glow of the candles.

After planning my own wedding I really want to explore the possibility of becoming a wedding planner. It’s such a wonderful day and if I can help other brides be as happy with their weddings as I was with mine then I could rest easy knowing I’ve made a positive impact on the start of a couple’s life together.A great big thanks to my parents and Josh’s parents to making our dream wedding a reality – we couldn’t have done it without their love and support!
