WI Wednesday: come sail away

we love couples who follow their hearts and opt for a non-traditional wedding because it suits their unique style. that is just what this spunky couple did when they got married on a boat! we love the fun pops of color, the kilts, (oh, those kilts) and how casually perfect their day was. aliza rae photography captured each bit of their fun celebration…

we want to just sail away!

From the bride herself: We got engaged on a boat in August 2010. We decided to keep that theme going and actually have our ceremony on the water as well. Our ceremony took place on The Voyageur, one of the boats from The Milwaukee Boat Line. We docked downtown, sailed around through the harbor and had the Calatrava as our backdrop for the ceremony. After the boat ceremony we had a cocktail reception at The Palms Bistro, downtown in the Historic Third Ward.

“Actually, the story of my dress is kind of funny. It’s a Vera Wang, but not because “I had to have a designer dress” but I actually had bought the dress at a small boutique in Florida, like 10 years ago…it was drastically on sale and fit perfectly, and it was a Vera Wang…I always figured I would have some reason to wear it. Didn’t buy it thinking it would be a wedding dress someday…and that was actually the first time I wore it. When we decided to go the nontraditional route (boat, kilts, etc) it just seemed like the perfect choice.

My best advice to brides is to keep it simple and stay true to what you want and what will best represent you and your fiancee’s personality and relationship. Breaking tradition and creating your own can be fun! like getting married on a boat, in a kilt! (my husband is Irish) This is your day, it only comes once, and you should enjoy it, not be burdended by stress and worries over insignificant details.
